A luau is Hawaii's evening feast: a lei greeting, an open bar, a buffet built around kalua pig lifted from the underground imu oven, and then a stage show of hula and Polynesian dance that usually ends with a fire-knife dancer. About three hours, USD 150-260 per adult, and the single most-booked evening on any Hawaiian island. Kauai has four worth considering. They are genuinely different, and the differences are what people ask about: theatrical or traditional, oceanfront or garden, and (the question north-shore visitors always have) how far is the drive.
North-shore visitors, read this first: there is no luau near Hanalei
Every Kauai luau is on the east or south side: Lihue, Wailua, or Poipu. From Princeville or Hanalei that is a 45-60 minute drive each way, and the show ends around 8:30-9 PM, so plan on driving back on the dark two-lane highway (with the one-lane bridges) or book a night in Kapaa or Lihue around it. Smith's in Wailua is the closest to the north shore by about 15 minutes.

How to choose
You want the best show
Luau Kalamaku. It is the only luau in Hawaii staged in the round, and it tells a scripted story (a voyage from Tahiti to Kauai) with fire, aerialists and a real narrative arc rather than a revue of dances. The buffet is the standard luau spread; the optional Manor House four-course dinner upgrade is for people who care more about the food. Book the earlier arrival for the plantation train ride through the fields.
You want sunset over the ocean
Luau Ka Hikina. The newest of the four, on the lawn fronting Kalapaki Beach in Lihue, which faces the water at exactly the right time of evening. The show is more traditional than Kalamaku's and the setting does much of the work. Easiest walk-in for anyone staying at the Lihue resorts and for the cruise ships that overnight in Nawiliwili.
You are a family, on a budget, or on the north shore
Smith's Family Garden Luau. Run by the same family for four decades on the banks of the Wailua River: a tram through the botanical gardens, the imu unearthing ceremony, a big buffet, then a show that ranges across Hawaiian, Tahitian, Samoan, Filipino, Chinese and Japanese dance. The least polished and the most warm. It is also the cheapest and offers show-only tickets for about USD 25, and it is the closest luau to Princeville and Hanalei.
You are staying in Wailua and want small
Wailua Nui. The Hilton Garden Inn's shoreline luau is smaller and quieter than the big three, with the buffet and show in a compact setting. Not the one to drive across the island for, but the right answer if it is walking distance from your room.
Practical notes
- Nights: none of the four runs every night. Kalamaku and Smith's run several nights a week, Ka Hikina and Wailua Nui fewer. Check the calendar before you build the rest of the evening around it, and book a week or more ahead in summer and over the holidays.
- Timing: gates typically open 5:00-5:30 PM, dinner about 6:30, show 7:30-8:30 PM. Arrive at opening: the lei greeting, the imu ceremony and the good seats all happen early.
- Food honesty: luau buffets are large and traditional, not fine dining. Kalua pig, poi, lomi salmon, poke, chicken long rice, haupia. Vegetarians are fine on sides and desserts; tell them when you book.
- Kids: all four are family-friendly and price children lower (usually 3-12; under 3 free). Smith's is the most kid-forgiving; Kalamaku's show holds older kids best.
- Drive times: from Poipu about 25-35 minutes to Lihue, 40 to Wailua. From Princeville or Hanalei 45-60 minutes to Wailua, an hour-plus to Lihue.
Pair it with the day
The luaus cluster on the east side, so a luau evening pairs naturally with an east-side day: kayak the Wailua River to Secret Falls in the morning (weekdays only) and you are ten minutes from Smith's by dinner; or spend the afternoon in Kapaa.
